The Effect of Fluoxetine in the Treatment of Elderly Epilepsy Patients with Mild to Moderate Depression and Its Improvement on Depression Scores
Objective To analyze the efficacy of fluoxetine in the treatment of elderly epilepsy patients with mild to moderate depression and its improvement effect on depression. Methods Eighty-eight elderly patients with mild to moderate depression caused by epilepsy admitted to Xintai Mental Hospital in Shandong Province from February 2022 to September 2023 were non-randomly selected as the research subjects. They were divided into an observation group and a control group according to different treatment methods, with forty-four cases in each group. Both groups of pa-tients received routine antiepileptic treatment, while the observation group received additional treatment with fluox-etine.Compare the treatment outcomes, depression scores, and incidence of adverse reactions between two groups of patients. Results The total effective rate of the observation group was 97.73% (43/44),which was higher than 81.82%(36/44)of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(χ2=4.456,P<0.05).The Hamilton Depres-sion Rating Scale scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group at 4,6,and 8 weeks of treatment, and the differences were statistically significant(all P<0.05).There was no statistically significant differ-ence in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion The use of fluoxetine in the treatment of elderly patients with epilepsy and mild to moderate depression has definite advantages,as it can effec-tively improve the patient's disease symptoms without increasing adverse reactions.
