The classical history of political thought generally imagines a"static society"and has long systematically neglected the dynamic Jianghu society.Returning to the historical world of Luo Yin,a thinker of the late Tang and the Five Dynasties, will find the distinctive value of the Jianghu context in reinterpreting his political thought.Based on the Jianghu context,Luo Yin appears to integrate Confucianism and Taoism, but not all aspects and positions of them.He identifies with dialectical rather than inactive Taoism, and political rather than ethical Confucianism. The ideological bridge connecting the two is an ideal pursuit of wealth and honor, which is the combination of utilitarianism formed in the secular experience of the Jianghu and the traditional Confucian education.Taking Luo Yin as a case,we can find a distinctive approach to explicating the underlying logic of traditional Chinese politics, and thus show the academic significance of"the history of thought of the Jianghu"for the study of the history of political thought.
