Artificial intelligence has been called"the next new media."Like the major technological innovations that preceded it,it has a restructuring effect on people and society. At present, the development of artificial intelligence presents two increasingly clear routes:(1)disembodiment("the extended mind"):the application process of human media technologies, from analog media, digital media, social media to large language model artificial intelligence,is an increasingly virtualized/dematerialized/disembodied process. This process is leading us away from carbon-based bodies to a virtual world that coexists and interacts with the real world, the metaverse(a digital twin of people, things, and the environment). This trend is particularly reflected in the increase and improvement of AI technologies such as text-to-text,text-to-speech,text-to-picture,and text-to-video applications in the past two years.(2)Embodiment("the Mind Extended"):that is,the development of embodied artificial intelligence with a silicon-based body to to interact with the real environment in real time and continuously learn. This was initially manifested in various wearable devices, smart speakers, pet robots, and humanoid robots based on text-to-acts.The paper holds that these two development routes are in a double helix relationship that promotes each other. As a result, humans will face two new types of communication subjects,"communicative(disembodied)AI"and"communicative(embodied)robots".With this communication research will also face an"embodied AI turn"in theory, relationship, and ethics.Like the origins of communication studies as an academic disciplinary, today's human-computer communication research also requires a multidisciplinary perspective and approach.
