Abstract

Sound is a long-neglected dimension in memory studies.A mnemonic practice of the Nanjing Massacre organized by the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by the Japanese Invaders-114 men and women read aloud the Vautrin's Diary in relays, therefore constructing a distinct picture of sound, rhythm, and collective body memory. There is a formalized construction of rhythm and a unique tonal rhythm in the reading-aloud relay. At the same time, the reading-aloud relay contains multiple forms of bodily rhythms, and these rhythms are also identity, emotion, and sensory.Examining the Nanjing Massacre memory from the perspective of reading-aloud will help deepen our understanding of the relationship between"sound","body",and"collective memory".
