摘要
尽管《京报》在中外报刊史的研究中备受关注,但鲜有研究探讨其"文本性质"在与其他报刊碰撞后的变化意义.研究以《北华捷报》为基干史料,探讨它对《京报》的取舍调用.通过各式改译,《北华捷报》利用《京报》的特殊价值实现了在华纵向跨阶层情报的联结,凸显了报刊公开、周期性、双向交流的情报特性.这为进一步理解英国汉学知识传统的特性提供了论据.报刊情报的重点不是保密,更不神秘,而是考察、评论、分析、批评,搜集并产出关于中国的事实型知识,甚至是引导舆论、刺激争论、干涉外交等.这在19世纪中叶全球信息流通格局逐渐成型与中国本土官僚公众的崛起背景下具有独特意义.
Abstract
The traditional Chinese newspaper Peking Reporter has attracted much attention in the study of Chinese and foreign newspaper history,but few studies have explored the changes and significance of its"textual nature"after its collision with other newspapers and periodicals.This paper takes The North-China Herald as the basic historical material and explore how it delt with PR.Through various ways of translation,TNCH utilized the special value of the PR to realize the linkage of vertical and cross-class intelligence in China.The thesis reinterprets the changed nature of the PR in terms of"newspaper intelligence"to emphasize the open,cyclical,and bi-directional exchange of intelligence characteristics of the Gazette.It also provides an argument for further understanding the character of the intellectual tradition of British Sinology.The focus of newspaper intelligence was not secrecy,let alone mystery,but rather to examine,comment,analyze,and criticize,to gather and produce factual knowledge about China,and even to guide public opinion,stimulate controversy,and interfere in diplomacy.This is of unique significance in the mid-19th century in the context of the shaping of global information flows and the rise of a local Chinese bureaucratic public.
