Difficulties in the Cardiovascular Field and the Potential Application of Bacterial Nanocellulose
Cardiovascular diseases(myocardial infarction, coronary atherosclerosis, hypertension, etc.)have become the leading cause of human mortality worldwide, and these diseases are currently treated mainly with medications, and in severe cases, surgical procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting are required. This paper briefly describes the urgent need for small-caliber artificial blood vessels and artificial heart valves as well as the characteristics of bacterial nanocellulose(BNC),reviews the recent research progress of BNC in the cardiovascular field, and predicts the future direction of development.Bacterial nanocellulose has outstanding potential for cardiovascular applications due to its shape plasticity,3D fiber network structure with extracellular matrix-like structure, high water-holding property, and good blood and cell compatibility, which lays the foundation for its future development in this field.
