Representation of Suffering,Media Agency, and Public Sympathy:The Practice of Emotional Domestication in"Shidu"News
Based on domestication theory as a conceptual tool, this paper analyzes the emotional domestication strategies of the media towards the suffering of"shidu"families, the term for parents who have lost their only child, and the corresponding impact.Research has found that media use the visual impact,spatio-temporal narrative and proxy language through image modality, emotional domestication strategies as well as"externalizing"the suffering of"shidu"to narrow the psychological, emotional and social distance between the suffering and the public. The public has developed condemnatory, compassionate, empathetic and helpless sympathy in cyberspace. Thus, the suffering has been"domesticated"as a social practice with moral education functions.
