Based on the premise that invisibility is a fundamental characteristic of infrastructure, recent infrastructure-oriented research in media and communication studies has emphasized"inversion"as its basic approach,in which the research object transforms from invisible state to visible state.Through a case study of Shanghai's urban regeneration project of moving cables underground at the"Internet hotspot"Wukang Mansion, this paper reveals the fluidity and multidimensionality of(in)visibility,as well as the intercon-nectedness of different dimensions, pointing out the instability and limitations of classical theoretical assump-tions about invisibility. It proposes that tracking the operation of(in)visibility be adopted as a comprehen-sive approach to study media infrastructure,to further uncover the theoretical potential of the infrastructure perspective for media studies and adjacent disciplines.
