The Impact of Digital Economy Development on Urban Sprawl:From Dual Perspectives of Land Use and Labor Employment
The digital economy has become a new driving force to change the mode of urban development.Promoting high-quality urban development with the digital economy is an effective way to solve the current problem of urban sprawl.Empirical research in Chinese cities shows that the digital economy has a mitigating effect on urban sprawl.After considering the endogeneity problem,replacing the core variables,and excluding the sample of municipalities,the conclusions remain robust.The digital economy can increase the intensity and the efficiency of urban land use,improve the employment structure and reduce the degree of labor mis-match,and then synergistically achieve the alleviating effect on urban sprawl.In areas where the industrial structure is relatively reasonable or the intervention role of local governments is relatively effective,the mitigat-ing effect of the digital economy on urban sprawl will be more obvious.In addition,the mitigating effect of the digital economy on urban sprawl is more significant in cities with larger scale and higher policy intensity,in the eastern region and belonging to urban agglomerations.Based on this,we should actively promote the devel-opment and digital transformation of urban digital economy,narrow the gap of digital economy among cities,give full play to the digital economy to help high-quality employment,reasonably guide urban spatial plan-ning,and realize the improvement of the quality and efficiency of existing spatial resources,so as to alleviate urban sprawl and improve the quality of urban development.
