Temporal-Spatial Coordinates of Political Thought History Research and Their Potential Transformation:Based on a Comparative Analysis of Three Methodological Approaches
Political thought history research inevitably involves elements such as contexts, issues, texts, thinkers, and researchers.Different emphases on these elements, based on different knowledge traditions, form different temporal-spatial coordinates for the study of the history of political thought. This article uses a temporal-spatial coordinate analysis framework of de-spatiotemporal,re-spatiotemporal,and spatiotemporal change to compare three mature methodological approaches of political thought history,namely,text-oriented research represented by Leo Strauss, historical contextualism represented by Quentin Skinner, and conceptual history research represented by Reinhart Koselleck. It can be seen that the three coordinate system schemas have their own justifications for different emphases on these elements, leading to consensus, divergence, and integration in the study of the history of political thought.Furthermore, they can also be conditionally trans-formed,enriching and expanding the research on the history of political thought at the methodological level for the present and future.
