The Origin and Development of Cities in the Yangtze River Basin
Observing the development of Chinese urban history from the perspective of river basins, there is a distinctive main vein:from the beginning of the civilization era until the Sui and Tang dynasties,Chinese cities in ancient times were generally"stronger in the Yellow River Basin than in the Yangtze River Basin";since the Sui and Tang dynasties and up to now,it has become"the Yangtze River Basin exceeds the Yellow River Basin".As far as the Yangtze River basin is concerned, from the decline of Liangzhu Culture until be-fore the Sui and Tang dynasties, the cities in the Yangtze River basin were long"inferior in the upper reaches compared to the middle and lower reaches";since the beginning of the Tang and Song dynasties until nowa-days,the cities in the Yangtze River basin have become"the lower reaches exceeding the middle and upper reaches".China's first urban revolution occurred in the Yellow River Basin, and China's second urban revolu-tion occurred in the Yangtze River Basin during the Song Dynasty. The first one was mainly derived from the practical purposes of urban construction, such as defense and commercial exchange, while the second one ful-ly demonstrated the essential needs of urban development, such as culture and value.
