Making Plural Cites:Augmented Reality and the Rise of Digital Hybrid Spaces
With the continuous emergence of spatial computing devices, the application of augmented re-ality(AR)technology in global urban environments is becoming increasingly widespread. This paper argues from the perspective of AR technology and urban spatial transformation that AR technology enables digital ele-ments to transcend their traditional role as secondary representations of physical reality, and become constitu-tive elements of spatial reality. This shift gives rise to a digital hybrid space,a form of space that integrates dig-ital elements with physical infrastructure. The emergence of digital hybrid spaces brings about changes on two levels:urban spatial landscapes and spatial practices. The spatial transformations brought about by AR tech-nology turn urban forms into a composite of coexisting digital hybrid spaces, where cities exist as multiples. In contemporary China, where urbanization and digitalization are rapidly converging, the technological civiliza-tion landscape shaped by AR technology and digital hybrid spaces prompts us to reimagine urban civilization and accordingly adjust the design thinking of urban governance.
