Investigation of the Sogdian He Family in the Northern Dynasty
It is argued that"He Ba-He Shikai"from the Northern Dynasty period were Sogdian de-scendants.The clan originated from Jin-Shan(金山,the Golden Mountain),which then relocated to Chai-Shan(豺山,the Dhole Mountain)and submitted to the Northern Wei court in the reign of Emper-or Daowu(道武)Tuoba Gui(拓跋珪).By comparing the historical documents of"He Ba-He Shikai"clan and Suhe clan,we can know that the family of He Ba did not originate from the Xianbei clan Su-he.Neither the official historical records nor the epitaphs specified the ancestry of people like He Ba and He An,which can be attributed to Wei Shou's deliberate flattery of the favourite He Shikai.After the death of He Shikai,the clan's Sogdian characteristics in cultures,physical appearances,and regional provenance were no longer eschewed in the textual documents.
