Preliminary Research on the Xun-gao(勋告)Documents Unearthed from the Keyakekuduke Watchtower Site in Yuli County,Xinjiang
The Keyakekuduke watchtower site was the former location of the"Sha-dui"(沙堆,or sand dune)watchtower,a grassroots military unit administered by the Karasahr town in the Tang Dynas-ty.Over 800 pieces of paper documents and wooden slips have been uncovered from the site.Most paper documents are Xun-gao(勋告,the official document issued by the Tang court which announced the conferral of official position or peerage to the individuals with great military achievements)documents or related to Xun-gao,which provide new archaeological materials for our understandings on various issues such as the Xun-gao system in the Tang Dynasty,the daily life of frontier soldiers,the sources of con-scription in the four towns of Anxi Protectorate,the operational details of the watchtower warning system in the frontier area,as well as the transformations of the military system of the Tang Dynasty.
