Examination of Newly Unearthed Epitaph of Cheng Fu-jun(程府君)of Tang Dynasty from Turfan, with a Discussion of the Unification of the Army and Government in the Yi-xi-ting(伊西庭)Region after the An Lushan Rebellion
The epitaph was unearthed from the East Badamu cemetery of Turfan in 2022.According to its content,we know that Cheng Huan(程奂),the tomb owner was once the vice Protector-General of Bei-ting(Bei-ting Fu-du-hu,北庭副都护).Ever since the discovery of the tomb of Gaoyao in Turfan in 1984,this is another discovery of the tombs of the Tang Dynasty senior officers in the western re-gion.Based on the examination of the epitaph we clarified the career path of the tomb owner in the bu-reaucracy.The protagonist Cheng Huan arrived in Beiting by following Li Yuanzhong(李元忠),and was gradually promoted because of various military achievements. He had held various important positions such as the vice commissioner of the Han-hai army(Han-hai-jun Fu-shi,瀚海军副使),Si-ma of the Xi-zhou Prefecture(Xi-zhou Si-ma,西州司马),and the Zhang-shi of Bei-ting Protectorate(Bei-tingfu Zhang-shi,北庭府长史),and finally became the vice Protector-General of Bei-ting.At the same time, the career path of Cheng Huan also demonstrated how the Yi-xi-ting region accordingly adjusted its inte-grated management system in face of the looming threat of Tubo after the An Lushan Rebellion.
