The moral-cultural education and relevant social impacts before and after the establishment of Xinjiang province during the late Qing Dynasty
Based on the study of memorial to the throne archives and multilingual records, this arti-cle provides an overview of the issues regarding the moral-cultural education and its social impacts before and after the establishment of Xinjiang province during the late Qing Dynasty. After the recovery of Xin-jiang by the Qing's army, while administratively restructuring the region into a formal province, local bu-reaucrats represented by Zuo Zongtang(左宗棠)also actively promoted the social education system cen-tred on li-zhi(礼治,or governance based on Confucian rites)in the region.Through approachs such as the establishment of schools, publication of books, construction of ritual systems, expounding of imperi-al edicts, and theatrical performance, profound transformations were evoked in the ideological and cul-tural realms of Xinjiang. At the same time, the Cheng-Zhu school and its associated values were widely disseminated across Xinjiang through schooling and the distribution of relevant books. In particular, the orthodox historical view within the system became the guiding principle for minority scholars in Xinjiang when writing about the history of Chinese dynasties.Additionally, through regular participation in the demonstration of rites and theatrical performance, local populations, especially ordinary Hui people in southern Xinjiang, not only became familiarised with the forms and architectural structures of local tem-ples,but also gained considerable insights into these periodic ceremonies and their underlying value sys-tems.Furthermore,the recurrent delivery of imperial edicts and relevant texts facilitated a wide under-standing of Confucian concepts, such chu-li-ru-xing(出礼入刑),among people in Xinjiang from all ethnic backgrounds.Consequently, the Confucian ritual knowledge and social values centred around em-peror worship were successfully introduced into the spiritual world of the Hui people in Xinjiang,pro-foundly advancing the region's integration with the mainland in terms of social ethics, values, and na-tional identity.
