Functionalism advanced in Germany moves translation from a static linguistic phenomenon to being considered as an act of intercultural communication. To a certain extent, it helps to solve the lasting dilemmas of literal vs. free translation, and dynamic vs. formal equivalence in translation studies. This paper aims to briefly introduce the key theories, rules and models that have a great impact on later generations of translator.
