A New Study of Toponyms gog, gogyul, kog and kogyul in Ancient Tibetan Documents
Gog,gogyul, kog, kogyul are old Tibetan toponyms recorded in The Old Tibetan Annals(Or.8212/187)and in The Old Tibetan Chronicle(P.T.1287),of which the name gog also appears in the ancient Tibetan inscrip-tions in Wakhan Corridor.Since the 1940s,these four toponyms have been studied by dozens of distinguished scholars. However,no agreement has been drawn over which these four old Tibetan toponyms should correspond to yet.By examining the specific references of gog, gogyul, kog, and kogyul in different contexts,it is believed that gog on the stone inscriptions in the Wakhan Corridor, gog, gogyul, kogyul in lines 4/10/20 of Or.8212(187)and kog in line 525 of in P.T.1287 all refer to Wakhan, which belonged to the stodpyogs(upper part)of Tubo(the ancient Tibet)at that time.Kog in line 16 of Or.8212(187)should be Kuozhou, which belonged to mdosmad ac-cording to the traditional Tibetan geographical concept.
