The Semantic Change of the Tibetan Term"deb-ther"(())and Mongolian-Tibetan Cultural Exchange during the Yuan Dynasty
This article,on one hand,traces the origins,meanings and historical evolution of the Tibetan term"()(deb-ther)in Tibetan literature,and on the other hand it compares the term with its counterparts in Mongolian and other languages.It is found that the Tibetan term"()(deb-ther)first appeared the Tibetan historical doc-uments around the 14th century and underwent a process of change in its written form from"()(deb-gter)to"()(deb-ther).It is also found that the term's semantic meaning could be traced back to the Mongolian term"debter"from the 13th century,which has a meaning not only related to"brochure","account book"and"docu-ment",but also refers to"historical record"and"chronicle".The process of semantic change of the term"()"(deb-gter)and its semantic connection with the related terms in the Mongolian language highlight,on one hand,the profound influence of the Mongolian culture on the Tibetan historical writing and cultural perceptions,on the other hand,constitutes a realistic portrayal and significant representation of the political,historical and cultural relations existed between the Tibetans,Mongolians and the central authorities of the Yuan Dynasty since the mid-13th century.
