The Topography,Cimate and Livelihood Economy of Labrang Described in the Investigation Report of the Exploratory Group During the Republic of China
Xiahe County of Gansu Province,famous for the Labrang Monastery,has its own distinct history,geogra-phy and religious culture,and it remains mysterious to outside world.During the period of the Republic of Chi-na,a large number of explorers went to Xiahe to explore the history,culture,economy,politics and people of Labrang.In the report of the explorers,Labrang was described as a place with high altitude,cold climate,small arable land,depressed agriculture,but prosperous animal husbandry.The Tibetan people there lived on a vast grassland with no the cumbersome etiquette or strict ethic of the mainland,and their lives are free and simple,with the concepts of"equality"and"freedom"being perfectly applied on this land.Although their life was in poverty,even full of hardships,however,compared with the inland villages in the period of the Republic of Chi-na,it was quiet and peaceful.
