A Preliminary Study on the Border Management in Lhodrak Region of Tibet in the Qing Dynasty
The border management of Lhodrak(Lho-brag)region of Tibet during the Qing Dynasty is an important and complex issue of national governance during the Qing Dynasty. From the mid-17th century onwards, the local governments of Tibet supported the Nyingma and Gelug sects to reform and build monasteries so as to set up a new governance structure during the early period of the Qing dynasty. In the early 18th century,Polhané Sönam Topgyé granted substantial support to the Nyingma sect, and the sect strengthened its influence in regional af-fairs.By the mid-18th century, the Qing court abolished the governance system under the jurisdiction of the re-gional rulers and reinforced direct governance of Tibet's border areas, which contributed to the local stability and development. In the early 19th century, the disaster relief archives illustrate how the Qing court gradually de-veloped an effective management system to address the complexities of border governance.
