Zhu Guangqian's translation of Benedetto Croce's concept of"intuition"exemplifies his practice of activating modern Chinese aesthetics through the mutual verification and interpretation of Chinese and Western literary thoughts.Croce's concept of"intuition"exists prior to rational thinking and serves as the starting point of all cognition,mainly referring to the subjects'cognitive activity that stimulated by external objects.Zhu Guangqian translated this concept into Chinese as"直觉"(zhijue),but there is a significant difference between these two terms.In the Chinese context,"直觉"(zhijue)transcends experience and represents the highest form of cognition,denoting an innate ability that does not rely on sensory stimulation from external objects.Zhu Guangqian's interpretation of"直觉"(zhijue)demonstrates his creativity in translation approach.By integrating the Western aesthetic of"disinterested contemplation"with Daoist philosophy of"contemplation with doing nothing",Zhu Guangqian further proposes the concept of"aesthetic experience",endowing it with a function to embellish human hearts,rendering it a modern aesthetic discourse suitable for the twentieth-century Chinese context.
