An Unsettled Wanderer,a Solitary Courtier,and a Man of Integrity:The Poetic Theme of Tears in the Works of Xie Ao
As a prominent survivor poet in the late Song Dynasty,Xie Ao frequently employed the motif of "tears"in his poetic works.Of the 295 poems included in the Complete Song Poetry anthology,approximately 20% employ the imagery of "tears," with nearly 60 poems featuring this motif. The metaphorical image of tears in Xie Ao's poetry provides readers with insight into the poet's melancholic and tearful emotions,as well as a comprehension of his solitude,the sorrow associated with the pain of national demise,and the grief experienced when commemorating the martyrs.Furthermore,the aesthetic characteristics of "tears" in Xie Ao's poetry can be identified,including the use of plain language,the portrayal of objectified human expression,and related imagery groups,which are distinctive to Xie Ao's personal characteristics.It is therefore beneficial to gain further insight into Xie Ao's personality and poetic style through an analysis of the motif of 'tears'in his poetry.
