A Critical Examination of the Interpretation of "三年学不至于穀不易得也"(If the Acquisition of Supreme Good Remains Unattainable Within a Three-year Period,and the Path to It is not Straightforward )
The interpretation of the phrase "三年学不至于穀不易得也" in the Tai Bo Chapter of the Analects of Confucius has been the subject of considerable debate,particularly with regard to textual research and the interpretation of specific words.The terms "至"and "穀"have been identified as particularly contentious.However,to accurately interpret this phrase,it is imperative to consider not only textual research and word interpretation but also the contextual environment in which the sentence is embedded. Firstly,this research makes use of the sentence structure of the Analects of Confucius as a point of reference,macroscopically analyzing the diverse interpretation of the sentence and inferring shifts in textual meaning through various sentence segmentation methods,thereby achieving a deeper understanding of the text.Secondly,when examining the sentence structure of the Tai Bo Chapter,the research discerns and analyzes key phrases such as "三年学" "至" and "不易",while observing the sentence structure of this particular sentence by summarizing similar sentence patterns found in other chapters of the Analects of Confucius. Finally,through the integration of textual research and the interpretation of the three characters "至","穀" and "易",this study elucidates hitherto unidentified meanings of the sentence.
