Supplementing and Reporting:An Analysis of the Confirmation Mechanism of the Imperial Edicts Conveyed by Eunuchs during the Xuande Period of the Ming Dynasty
In the Ming Dynasty, the practice of "supplementing and reporting" constituted a distinct form of reporting, specifically pertaining to the imperial edicts conveyed by eunuchs. As these orders were issued directly to relevant functional departments (such as the Six Administrative Sections )without being copied and distributed by the Six Departments of the Central Government, they were not official imperial documents issued through the established procedures.Accordingly, supplementary documentation was required for the purposes of reporting or record-keeping.During the Xuande period, there was a gradual expansion of the imperial edicts conveyed by eunuchs, reflecting the growing influence of eunuchs. As a result, the practice of"supplementing and reporting"during this period primarily served to confirm these orders, reflecting the effective control of the Xuande Emperor over eunuchs. However, between the growth and control, the subject of"supplementing and reporting"underwent multiple changes.
