On the British Invasion of Gurkha during Jiaqing Emperor's Reign and the Qing Dynasty's Policy towards Gurkha
Between 1814 and 1816,the British invaded Gurkha.During the war,the Jiaqing Emperor and his courtiers repeatedly rejected Gurkha's requests for assistance. This incident serves as a concrete manifesta-tion of the Qing Dynasty's policy towards Gurkha in practice. The formation of this policy was related to the Qianlong and Jiaqing emperors'understanding of Gurkha and the recognition of Gurkha's tributary status. The implementation of the policy,in the short term, avoided Xizang region from being involved in an external war. However, from a long-term strategic perspective,it had an adverse impact on Qing-Gurkha suzerain-tributary relationship and the security of the Xizang region.
