Frequent flooding and avulsion are the main natural disasters in the lower reaches of the Yellow River dur-ing the historical period,which may have exerted traumatic impacts on human livelihood in this area.Based on the synthesis of published records and historical documents,the causes about flooding and river course displacement and their impacts on natural environment,economy,and society in the area during different historical periods are stud-ied.It appears that the frequent disasters in the area are the result of the complex interactions of many factors.The natural factors mainly include climate,sediment deposition,and topography.Human activities also may have accel-erated these processes.In addition,the flooding phenomenon is closely associated with river course displacements in the area and the avulsion is also the result of flooding.
