Application of biomass fuel ash as a substitute for chemical fertilizer on sweetpotatoes
To investigate the effect of applying biomass fuel ash residue to soil on the growth of sweetpotatoes, this study determined the appropriate dosage range of biomass ash residue and analyzed the effect of applying biomass ash residue on the heavy metal content, yield, quality of sweetpotatoes and soil physicochemical properties through a combination of pot experiments and field experiments. The results of pot experiments showed that when the mass fractions of biomass ashes were 1%to 5%,sweetpotato seedlings could grow normally while the heavy metal con-tent in the seedlings would not be excessive.Among them, the addition of 5%biomass ashes resulted in the largest increase in biomass and plant height of sweetpotato seedlings compared to the control group, which increased by 111.13%and 27.60%respectively(P<0.05).Compared with the control group, the addition of 3%and 5%bio-mass ashes led to a significant increase in the mass fractions of organic carbon(TOC),hydrolyzable nitrogen(AN),and available potassium(AK)in the soil, with increases of 4.58%to 8.40%,6.31%to 11.28%,and 4.21%to 13.16%respectively,while having no significant effect on soil pH and available phosphorus(AP)content(P>0.05).When biomass ashes were applied to the field at a rate of 3,000 kg/667 m2,the mass fractions of TOC,AN,and AK were significant increased by an average of 19.52%,30.95%,and 36.88%respectively,while there was no significant change in the soil AP content. The yield and quality(starch, reducing sugar, soluble sugar, and protein content)of the sweetpotatoes treated with biomass ashes were equivalent to those of the sweetpotatoes trea-ted with conventional fertilization soil, and the addition of biomass ashes did not lead to an increase in soil pH or ex-cessive heavy metal content. The results indicated that the application of biomass ashes could ensure the healthy growth of sweetpotatoes, achieving the effect of replacing chemical fertilizers. Not only the transformation of bio-mass ashes into treasure could be realized, but also fertilization costs could be saved. Therefore, the rational and ef-fective application of biomass ashes in agriculture could promote a virtuous cycle of agricultural production, and a-void environmental pollution as well.
