Objective To explore the effect of volar universal locking plate and external fixation scaffold on elderly patients with distal radius fractures. Methods Clinical data of 84 elderly patients with distal radius fractures who received treatment in de-partment of orthopedics of our hospital from June 2020 to June 2022 were retrospectively analyzed.According to different treat-ment methods, the patients who received volar universal locking plate were included in plate group(n=46),and the patients who underwent external fixation scaffold were enrolled as scaffold group(n=38).Perioperative indicators and incidence rates of postop-erative complications were compared between the two groups, and the wrist function(Cooney wrist score)before surgery and at 6 months after surgery was recorded and compared. Results The intraoperative blood loss, surgical time and hospital stay were more or longer in plate group than those in scaffold group(P<0.05).At 6 months after surgery, the scores of pain, functional status, range of motion and grip strength were significantly increased in both groups(P<0.05),and more significantly in plate group(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative complications between the two groups(P>0.05).Con-clusion:In elderly patients with distal radius fractures, both treatments can achieve significant therapeutic effects, but the exter-nal fixation stent treatment is less traumatic, the postoperative recovery of patients is faster, and the volar universal locking plate treatment can improve the wrist joint function more significantly.
