Inhibitory activity and mechanism of the extract of Oenothera biennis L.seeds against Bacillus subtilis
In order to investigate the bacteriostatic effect of Oenothera biennis L.seeds extract on Bacillus subtilis, the ethanol extract of O.biennis seeds(OBSD)was used as a material in the present study to investigate its bacteriostatic ability on B.subtilis,as well as its effect on bacterial cell membrane and respiratory metabolism. The results showed that the lowest inhibitory concentration was 4 mg/mL,the permeability of the cell membrane of B.subtilis increased, the conductivity increased, the content of alkaline phosphatase increased, the intracellular nucleic acids and proteins leaked, and the scanning electron microscope showed that the morphology and structure of B.subtilis cells were changed abnormally after treatment with ethanolic extracts of O.biennis seeds. The results of the inves-tigation on the oxidative respiratory metabolism of the bacteria showed that OBSD inhibited the respiration of B.subtilis by inhibiting the activities of phosphofructokinase(PFK),hexokinase(HK)and pyruvate kinase(PK)in the enzymatic pathway(EMP),and finally exerted a bacteriostatic effect. This study elucidated the mechanism of inhibition of B.subtilis by O.biennis seeds and lays the founda-tion for the use and development of O.biennis seeds.
