Study on the Aesthetic Connotation of Character Appraisals in Shi Shuo Xin Yu
The Wei,Jin,Southern, and Northern Dynasties represent a pivotal era in the development of Chinese classical litera-ture and aesthetics. Shishuo Xinyu encapsulates the socio-historical conditions of this period,as well as the life attitudes and aes-thetic experiences of Wei-Jin scholars. The character appraisals in the Wei-Jin period are rooted in the authenticity and intrinsic qualities of individuals, emphasizing the harmonious integration of humans with nature, mutual appreciation and communication among individuals, and self-transcendence. This reflects a form of humanistic concern characterized by harmonious coexistence and mutual enlightenment, which resonates with modern ecological aesthetic concepts. This study explores the aesthetic connota-tions of character appraisals from the dimensions of human-nature relationships, interpersonal interactions, and self-transcend-ence.
