Victims of American Dream in the Context of Consumerism:On Dreiser's Sister Carrie
Sister Carrie is one of Theodore Dreiser's most renowned novels. It focuses on a rural girl who dreams of rising to prom-inence,depicting the harsh and cruel reality of American consumerism and analyzing the nature and essence of desire. By exami-ning Carrie's journey in pursuit of her dreams,this paper explores the impact of consumerism on the American moral framework and analyzes how the alienation of the American Dream under consumerism contributes to the degradation of Carrie's moral sys-tem. This study aims to understand the profound implications embedded in Dreiser's novel.
