Meta-analysis prevalence and risk factors of sarcopenia in hospitalized elderly patients aged 60 years and above
Objective To explore the prevalence and risk factors of sarcopenia in hospitalized elderly patients over 60 years old by a meta-analysis,and to provide evidence-based reference for the early management of sarcopenia in hospitalized elderly patients. Methods The literature on the prevalence and risk factors of sarcopenia in elderly inpatients in VIP,CNKI,Wanfang,PubMed,Embase,Web of Science and the Cochrane Library from the establishment of the databases to April 2023 was searched. And Review Manager 5.4 and Stata 16 were used for the meta-analysis.Results A total of 13 articles were included finally, with a total sample size of 4 626 cases, including 1410 patients with sarcopenia. The results of meta-analysis showed that the overall prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly inpatients was 31%(95%confidence interval(CI):25%-38%),32%(95%CI:28%-37%)in men,and 40%(95%CI:34%-45%)in women. The meta-analysis of risk factors showed that age(odds ratio OR=1.43,95%CI:1.27-1.61),sex(OR=1.77,95%CI:1.48-2.11),osteoporosis(OR=3.4,95%CI:1.85-8.72),physical activity(OR=1.83,95%CI:1.54-2.19)and nutritional status(OR=1.6,95%CI:1.43-1.79)were risk factors of sarcopenia in elderly inpatients. Conclusions The prevalence of sarcopenia in hospitalized elderly patients was relatively high, and the prevalence of women was higher than that of men.Age,gender, osteoporosis, physical exercise and nutritional status were the risk factors for the occurrence of sarcopenia in hospitalized elderly patients. Thus, early intervention should be actively carried out to reduce the occurrence of sarcopenia and improve the quality of life of hospitalized elderly patients.
