Mediating effects of positive coping styles between graduate medical students'appreciation of social support and mental health literacy
Objective To investigate the mediating effect of positive coping strategies on the understanding of social sup-port and mental health literacy among medical graduate students,so as to provide scientific basis for the practice of mental health promotion. Methods In September,2023,a convenient sampling method was used to select 936 medical master's students from a university in Hubei province as the survey subjects. The survey tools included a self-designed"General Information Survey Form",a Youth Mental Health Literacy Assessment Scale,an Understanding Social Support Scale, and a Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire-Positive Coping Style Questionnaire.SPSS 22.0 statistical software was used for data analysis, the SPSS Process plugin developed by Hayes was used for mediation effect testing, and the Harman univariate test was used to test for possible common method biases. Results The psychological health literacy score of medical graduate students was(83.23±12.38),and there were statistically significant differences in gender, liking of their original family, satisfaction with their growth experience, and family atmosphere(t=5.756,-3.684,-3.03,-3.628,P<0.05);The score of the Social Support Perception Scale for medical graduate students was(64.14±11.87),and there were statisti-cally significant differences in gender, whether they were left behind, liking of their original family, family atmosphere, and satisfaction with their growth experience(t=-3.268,-2.319,8.449,8.214,8.342,P<0.05);The score of the ques-tionnaire on positive coping styles for medical graduate students was(25.24±7.38),and there were statistically signifi-cant differences in gender, liking of the original family, family atmosphere, and satisfaction with growth experiences(t=-3.029,4.013,4.803,4.781,P<0.05);The scores of the Mental Health Literacy Assessment Scale for 936 medical graduate students were positively correlated with the scores of the Perceived Social Support Scale and the Simplified Cop-ing Style Questionnaire-Positive Coping Style Questionnaire(r=0.396,0.296,P<0.05),the score of the Perceived So-cial Support Scale was positively correlated with the score of the Simple Coping Style Questionnaire-Positive Coping Style Questionnaire(r=0.591,P<0.05);The predictive effect of social support on mental health literacy was significant(β=0.396,t=12.712,P<0.001),and after the mediating variable was included, the direct predictive effect of perceived social support on mental health literacy remained significant(β=0.342,t=8.918,P<0.001);The positive predictive effect of social support on positive coping strategies was significant(β=0.365,t=22.132,P<0.001),the positive pre-dictive effect of positive coping strategies on mental health literacy was also significant(β=0.147,t=2.390,P<0.1);The upper and lower limits of bootstrap 95%CI for understanding the direct effect of social support on mental health lit-eracy and the mediating effect of positive coping strategies do not include 0.The direct effect(0.342)and mediating effect(0.054)accounted for 86.404%and 13.596%of the total effect(0.396)respectively.Conclusion Positive coping strategies partially mediate the relationship between social support and mental health literacy among medical graduate students.
