Yu Yao Yuan Fang(《御药院方》Formulas by Royal Medical Academy)by XU Guozhen of Yuan Dynasty is the current existing earliest and most complete formulary by royal medical academy.Since the Ming Dynasty, its transmission has gradually become rare, with the only Zhiyuan edition surviving collected successively by ZHANG Jinwu,LU Xinyuan, and others. In the late Qing Dynasty, the book flowed into Japan along with Lu's other collections and is now stored in Seikado Bunko(静嘉堂文库)of Japan. As early as the Goryeo Dynasty, this book had already been introduced to Korean Peninsula. The Li Dynasty of Korea attached great importance to the book and listed it as one of the examination textbooks for medical talent selection, and printed it in movable type. The 11-volume Korean version was brought to Japan and collected by Saiki-han Takasue Mouri(毛利高标).Tanba Genkan(丹波元简)borrowed and transcribed it,and Chiga Yoshihisa(千贺芳久)reborrowed it from Tanba Genkan and found it of high value, thus block-printed it in the tenth year of the Kansei reign(宽 政)in Japan. This edition has gradually been introduced to China through merchant pickup, bookstore sales, and scholar collection, becoming the dominant version in China. The book of Yu Yao Yuan Fang has been repeatedly lost and rediscovered in circulation among China,Korea, and Japan, which not only demonstrates the strong vitality, influence, and radiation of Chinese medicine culture within the east Asian sinosphere, but also proves the importance of cultural communication.
