In the Ming and Qing Dynasties,Xin'an medical school has seen the rise of doctors and medical readings for popularization,many of which are written in the genre of verses and among which the formula verses have been widely circulated.This paper selects formulas from works of representative Xin'an doctors',compares them with the texts from the classic of Shang Han Lun(《伤寒论》Treatise on Cold-Damage Diseases),and summarizes the features of their knowledge construction through discourse analysis of the genre stages and the cognitive patterns.The result shows that verses of syndromes categorized by formulas focus on the properties,efficacies and pharmacology of medicines and present illness as can be expelled,harmonized,soothed or suppressed;while,verses of formulas categorized by syndromes emphasize on the etiology and symptoms of diseases and their relation with medicine effects.Both genres prefer everyday language and tend to frame similar formulas or symptoms to compare for easy memorization and ready innovation.The knowledge construction of formula verses represented by Xin'an medical school can be a good reference for compiling popular readings of Traditional Chinese Medicine nowadays.
