A Retrospection of the Translation of Traditional Chinese Medicine Terminology and Compilation of Chinese-English TCM Dictionaries:An Interview with Professor LI Yanwen
Professor OU Ming,a pioneer of Chinese medicine translation,led his team in the 1980s and 1990s to make significant contributions by compiling a series of Chinese-English dictionaries on Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM).Among these works,the Chinese-English Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicine edited by his team is hailed as groundbreaking in the history of Chinese medicine translation and international communication.It has played a crucial role in the international dissemination of TCM and the establishment of international standards for Chinese medicine nomenclature.As a core member of OU Ming's TCM translation team,Professor LI Yanwen was heavily involved in the compilation of the entire bilingual dictionary spearheaded by OU Ming.This paper,through an interview with LI Yanwen,records the origin and influence of compiling Chinese-English TCM dictionaries,the role of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in international cooperation in TCM,TCM translation methods and principles,and the division of labor and cooperation among translators.It also discusses the academic influence of XIE Zhufan and OU Ming,international exchange and cooperation in TCM,and the cultivation of TCM-oriented foreign language and translation talents in the new era.The interview aims to summarize the achievements in the translation and international dissemination of TCM in China at the onset of the reform and opening up period,to explore the principles and strategies for TCM translation in the new era,to promote the establishment of an international discourse system for TCM,to enhance the capacity of TCM translation in serving national strategies,and to help TCM culture contribute to global governance and the building community with shared future for humanity.
