The study takes the dissimilarities between the Song dynasty proofreading version and the newly engraved version of Qian Jin Yao Fang(《千金要方》Important Formulas Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces)as materials to collate and analyze medicine names in the Preface of the Newly Collated Bei Ji Qian Jin Yao Fang. The study finds out that the ministers of the Song dynasty paid attention to the verification of names and facts, distinguish between medicinal parts, make additions and changes to medicine names when organizing the book. This has led to a refinement of the classification of medicine in this edition, reflects the level of development of herbalism in the Song dynasty and strengthens the clinical usefulness of the book. However, the revisions made by the Song dynasty's ministers contained direct changes without clear references,as well as contradictions with the Song herbalistic understanding. This suggests that the complexity and uncertainty of the Song dynasty proofreading version of Qian Jin Yao Fang deserves great attention and should not be followed blindly. The study would serve as a basis to explore in depth the ideology and guiding principles of the ministers of the Song dynasty in revising the ancient texts of Chinese medicine,so as to provide a reference for the contemporary application of Song dynasty proofreading of medical books,as well as for the proofreading of heirloom herbalistic literature.
