The historical study of diseases is inevitably intertwined with medical view of disease.Due to differing paradigms of Western and Chinese medicine,interpreting ancient medical materials through a modern lens of disease may lead to fragmented understanding and a loss of holistic insight.However,limiting oneself solely to traditional Chinese medical views may sometimes hinder an accurate evaluation of the true nature of diseases and their societal impacts.In recent years,there has been an increase in studies examining diseases from socio-cultural perspectives,providing broader insights and greater flexibility.At the same time,it is essential to avoid the tendency to stray too far from medical domains.The principle of conducting systematic evaluations by integrating multiple views should be grounded in medical reasoning while allowing for humanistic expansion,and utilizing Western theories as a foundation while tracing the roots through Chinese perspectives.
