Sidelights on Practice Strategies and Fortunes of Chinese-American Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries
At the end of the 19th century,the Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)industry experienced rapid growth in the United States.Three Chinese-American TCM practitioners,Li Po Tai,Tom Foo Yuen and Tom Leung went out of Chinatown,successfully carried out businesses in non-Chinese communities,gained the trust and respect of Americans,and better integrated into American society.The survival and integration strategies of the three practitioners lay not only in embodying unique value with excellent treatment skills,gaining a foothold with good curative effects,but also in adapting discourse,breaking cultural barriers,and rising from medical service to cultural communication.But with the strengthening of medical and health management in the United States,their careers came to an end.The case of the three practitioners not only can be a reference for the cross-cultural communication of TCM talents,but also has an enlightening significance for the overseas dissemination of contemporary Chinese culture,reflecting the important influence of local backing on cultural communication.
