Chen Wenzhi,was a Ming dynasty general who fought against Japanese pirates,and a physician.His life events were unclear.The study reviews various extant documents,examines aspects such as Chen Wenzhi's birth and death dates,his relationship with Qi Jiguang,his life in Bazhou,the title and publication of Yang Ke Xuan Cui(《疡科选粹》Essentials of External Sores)and the historical sources of Chen Wenzhi's biography in Jia He Zheng Xian Lu(《嘉禾征献录》Records of Contributions from Jiahe).The study arrives at new conclusions that clarify inaccuracies in related research.In researching ancient medical figures,it is essential to carefully scrutinize existing materials,thoroughly explore all sources,compare and analyze the subtle differences between various documents,seek breakthroughs from these differences,simplify complexities,eliminate falsehoods,and restore the true nature of these medical figures.
