Tong Ren Tang Yao Mu(《同仁堂药目》Medicine List of Tong Ren Tang)was published in the 45th year on the throne of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty(1706),and was compiled by Le Fengming,the third son of Le Xianyang,the founder of Tong Ren Tang(同仁堂).This book described the types and quantities of Chinese patent medicines produced and sold by Tong Ren Tang.The whole book adopted the writing method of"one Chinese patent medicine being one item",listing the name of Chinese patent medicine first,and then explaining its indications and curative effects.The book recorded methods of taking or using some medicines,but did not record the composition and dosage.It was similar to current instructions of medicines,and was publicly published.The number of patent medicines recorded in this book was constantly increasing,and its content was revised and updated with the development of Tong Ren Tang.Tong Ren Tang Yao Mu was a brief handbook that reflected the history of the development of Chinese patent medicines.It was diverse in medicine types,abundant in varieties,and widely sourced.The ingredients of patent medicines were meticulously selected,and the medicines had undergone extensive clinical selections,improvements,and validations over time.The book provides significant reference value for the selection of formulas together with research and development Chinese patent medicines,as well as for research on disease spectra.
