The Grand Canal(Beijing-Hangzhou Canal)made important contributions to the cultural exchange and development of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)culture in the Ming and Qing dynasties.This article makes use of the relevant historical materials of the Grand Canal and the local chronicles of important counties and cities along the canal to sort out and explore the ways of transporting traditional Chinese medicinal materials on the Grand Canal during the Ming and Qing dynasties,the characteristics of the types of medicinal materials transported,and the impact of the south-north flow of medicinal materials.The research shows that the traditional Chinese medicinal materials transported on the Grand Canal can be roughly divided into three categories:tribute medicinal materials attached to the water transport system,medicinal materials carried on board,and medicinal materials commodities.The transportation of medicinal materials had the characteristics of adjusting measures to local conditions.Genuine medicinal materials can be transported to the capital and other non origin areas for sale and application.Due to economic development,more medicinal materials were transported from the north than from the south.The flow of medicinal materials on the Grand Canal enriched the types of medicines used by doctors,promoted the research of herbal medicines,propelled the prosperity of the medicinal materials market,and drived economic development.
