Xingbei refers to the area north of Guzhu mountain in ancient China, which is now called Yanbei District. Its geo-graphical scope can refer to the historical geographical space of the Ming dynasty, that is,the area north of Yanmenguan and the great wall of the Ming dynasty in and outside the north of Shanxi. Its east and west sides are in Taihang and Guancen mountains,bor-dering Hengshan mountain in the south and Yinshan mountain in the north.Due to its broken terrain environment,Xingbei is sur-rounded by important passes, and the ancient roads in the region are vertical and horizontal, forming a relatively independent geo-graphical unit in history.During Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern dynasties, the central settlement function of Pingcheng changed from"agglomeration"to"decline",and the form of Xingbei administrative region also changed from"integration"to"decomposi-tion".The turbulent and blending Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties are the epitome of the millennium changes of political geography in Xingbei area.Under the influence of regional geographical environment and central settlement, the geographical pat-tern of Xingbei administrative region presents three forms of"Two Parts","Three Parts"and"agglomeration",reflecting the histori-cal process of the continuous blending of ancient nomadic and agricultural civilization.
