Over the era of the Republic of China,the destruction of Yungang Grottoes partly resulted from natural factors or the maintenance.The most serious was due to the theft of Buddha statues.In 1929,the most serious pilfering occurred,and 96 Buddha heads were chiseled and hence destroyed.By 1935,319 Buddhist heads and 604 Buddhist statues had been destroyed.The era of Re-public of China was a period when Yungang Grottoes were gravely damaged.
