The statue inscriptions in the Yungang Grottoes in Datong,Shanxi province,a prominent cultural heritage,show the religious faith and ethical feelings of the people in Northern Wei dynasty.They worshiped Maitreya,believed in the relationship be-tween cause and effect and set up a tripolar model which combined Confucianism and Buddhism.Meanwhile,the inscriptions have the characteristics of benevolence,filial piety and devotion.The ultimate goal of believers was to lead people to do good deeds.The inscriptions,containing the history of the integration between Hu and Han and the process of cultural identity as well,reflected the shared community consciousness of the Chinese nation.
