Through a special investigation of grottoes in Xinzhou,the number,distribution and age of grottoes are systematically identified for the first time in this region.These grotto temples fall into four categories which are respectively in Xinding Basin,Fenhe River Basin,the surrounding area of Wutai Mountain and the eastern side of the Yellow River according to the factors like the terrain and distribution.All have their own regional characteristics,especially the grottoes carved with octagonal caisson ceiling in Fenhe River Basin and surrounding areas,which is of great significance for the study of the influence of wooden architecture on the excavation of these grottoes in Ming dynasty.
