Liao Tombs excavated at Dongfengli lane are representative of the late Liao dynasty in Datong.The unearthed artifacts,layout of murals and contents of paintings all have typical characteristics of late Liao dynasty tombs and are quite different from those of the early Liao dynasty.Moreover,the tomb structures,burial mode,as well as the Buddhist culture and even the regional culture embodied in Liao tombs of Dongfengli lane are the same as those of early Liao dynasty.This paper probes into the characteristics of burial customs in the tombs of Dongfengli lane as well as the similarities and differences compared with those in early Liao Tombs.Based on the existing archaeological materials,the paper presents the common features and significance of late Liao dyansty tombs in Datong area through the multi-angle and multi-directional analysis of the tomb structures,burial characteristics,unearthed cultural relics and the contents of murals in Liao tombs at the site of Dongfengli lane.
