Strengthening Family to Building Production:Transformation of Love Discourse in the Opera Film Liu Qiao'er
s:From mid 1950s to late 1950s,a large number of marriage-themed movies were produced in response to the need to publicize the Marriage Law of the People's Republic of China.Liu Qiao'er,who became known in the Yan'an period through different forms of literature and art,was also adapted into the movie Liu Qiao'er,which bears the imprint of the times. The film's transition from an individual-based discourse to a group-based dis-course,while emphasizes the marital autonomy of Liu Qiao'er and her female teammates, suspends the discourse of love and replaces it with a view of love that aspires to marry a model worker. This shift in narrative strategy implies that the purpose of the Communist Party of China in resolving the marriage issue after the founding of New China shifted from maintaining stability in the border areas to promoting production and construction. The recognition cer-emony for the contribution of model workers and heroes reinforces people's sense of ownership and makes the value of"sanctity of the model worker"become an internal driving force for young men and women in the construction of a new China.
