Effects of High Methionine Selenium on the Growth Performance,Slaughtering Performance, and Meat Quality of Hu Sheep
The effects of adding different concentrations of high Selenohomolanthionine(SeHLan)to the diet of Hu sheep on their growth performance, slaughtering performance, and meat quality were studied.Forty healthy Hu sheep, aged 4 months and with similar body weights(31.34±1.00 kg),were selected and randomly divided into four groups. They were fed for 80 days, with the four groups of experimental sheep being fed a basal diet(contai-ning 1.17 mg/kg DM selenium,Group Ⅰ),and the basal diet supplemented with 0.30 mg/kg SeHLan(Group Ⅱ),0.60 mg/kg SeHLan(Group Ⅲ),and 1.20 mg/kg SeHLan(Group Ⅳ),respectively.Feed intake was measured every two days during the feeding period, body weight measured every 15 days, and blood collected at the end of feeding to determine blood routine parameters.Three sheep from each group were selected for slaughter to determine slaughtering performance, and samples of muscle, heart, liver, spleen, kidney, duodenum, cecum, and colon were collected to detect selenium content and meat quality. The results showed that compared with Group Ⅰ,the mean platelet volume in Group Ⅱ was significantly reduced(P<0.05);the pre-slaughter live weight and car-cass weight in Groups Ⅲ and Ⅳ were significantly increased(P<0.05);the selenium content in the kidneys,liv-er,spleen,heart,colon,cecum,and back muscle in Groups Ⅲ and Ⅳ was significantly increased(P<0.01);the selenium content in the duodenum was significantly increased(P<0.05);the L∗ value of brightness in Groups Ⅱ,Ⅲ,and Ⅳ was significantly increased(P<0.01),and the shear force was significantly reduced(P<0.01);the a∗ value of redness and b∗ value of yellowness in Group Ⅲ were significantly increased(P<0.05).The results indicate that adding SeHLan to the diet can significantly improve the slaughtering performance and sele-nium deposition of growing Hu sheep, and improve meat quality, with the appropriate addition level of selenium in the form of SeHLan being 1.20 mg/kg.
